6th Grade Experience

A strong school–family partnership begins on day one. When we work together, students gain confidence and develop essential skills that lay the groundwork for future academic and personal success. We recognize that middle school can feel overwhelming for our incoming students, so we host a variety of events throughout the year to help our Elementary School families and students become comfortable and connected with our Cardinal community.

5th Grade Northwood Staff Visit to Elementary Schools
Each spring, Northwood’s administration and guidance team visit Northcrest, Price and Franke Park to share information about Northwood, review 6th grade course selections and answer questions in a comfortable, small-school setting.

5th Grade Visit to Northwood
Each spring, 5th grade students from Northcrest, Price and Franke Park visit Northwood during the school day to meet teachers and current students, explore classrooms, eat lunch, tour the building and ask all the questions they have! Student leaders host/hostess the students during all the activities. Not attending one of these schools? No worries, individual tours are always available, just contact our office to set up a time.

5th Grade Showcase Orientation
Incoming 5th grade students and their families are invited to Northwood to discover what middle school life is all about! 5th grade students from Northcrest, Price and Franke Park visit Northwood to explore information tables showcasing all aspects of Northwood. Students will also solidify their course requests for 6th grade. Throughout the evening, the cafeteria will host three short presentations about Northwood. The show choir and band will perform in the gym at scheduled times to round out the event.

6th Grade Transition Day
A few days before the school year begins, incoming 6th graders are welcomed to Northwood to meet their teachers and classmates. As the newest class of the Northwood Cardinals, students receive their schedules and locker assignments, practice transitioning between classes, participate in team-building activities, enjoy lunch and get prepared for a great start to middle school!

Back to School Night
Northwood families are invited to Back to School Night! Come pick up your schedule and locker, meet teachers, visit information tables, learn about Yondr pouches, OpenGate, get help with PowerSchool and ParentSquare.

What Makes 6th Grade Unique?

Dedicated 6th Grade Assistant Principal
A designated assistant principal focuses specifically on supporting 6th grade students and their families throughout the school year.

Core Teacher Team
Students learn with a consistent team of teachers who collaborate weekly to support both their academic growth and social-emotional needs. This may include student support plans, student recognition and grade checks.

A Hall of Their Own
6th grade students have a dedicated hallway that fosters a close-knit learning environment and supports their transition from elementary school.

Parkview Simulation Lab
In the spring, all 6th graders participate in a Parkview Simulation Lab guaranteed learning experience that supports the Portrait of a Connector within the Schools of Success. Students practice CPR using mannequins, take an ambulance tour with paramedics, first responders and explore various career pathways.
